Five Westerville high school seniors have earned a place among the nation’s top academic achievers as semifinalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recently announced that Cameron Marsolo and James Scarbrough of Westerville North, along with Westley Gorenz, Sarah Johnson, and Monchebolatan Pedro of Westerville South, are among more than 16,000 students across the country moving forward in the prestigious competition.
What It Means to Be a Semifinalist
Each year about 1.6 million high school juniors take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). From that group, the top 0.5 percent of scorers in each state are recognized as semifinalists. These students now have the chance to compete for roughly 6,930 National Merit Scholarships totaling nearly $26 million.
To advance to the finalist level, semifinalists must complete an application, maintain outstanding academic performance, and earn strong recommendations. About 95 percent of semifinalists typically reach finalist standing, and more than half of those finalists go on to earn the title of National Merit Scholar.
Scholarships and Recognition
National Merit Scholarships include $2,500 awards funded directly by NMSC, along with corporate-sponsored and college-sponsored scholarships. Altogether, the program provides about 8,000 awards each year, opening doors not only to financial support but also to national recognition that can boost college opportunities.
A Program with Staying Power
Since its founding in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program has stood apart for its independence from government funding and its focus on rewarding academic excellence. Headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, NMSC remains a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging scholastic achievement and recognizing student potential.
For Westerville’s five semifinalists, this recognition is both a milestone and the beginning of a new journey. With their strong academic records and community support behind them, they now step into the next stage of competition, one that could carry them into spring as National Merit Scholars.
