Ohio Wesleyan men’s soccer made the short trip down I-71 on Wednesday night and returned home with a satisfying result, a 3-1 victory over Capital. The Battling Bishops struck twice in the first half and added a third after the break to secure the win.

First Half Momentum

It didn’t take long for OWU to find its rhythm. In just the eighth minute, freshman Callum Wiggins scored the first goal of his young career, curling a shot into the upper right side of the net off a setup from Ryan Betts.

The Bishops doubled their lead in the 30th minute when Sam Owusu Sarfo tucked away his first goal of the season, giving the Red and Black a comfortable 2-0 edge heading into halftime.

Capital Fights Back, OWU Responds

The Comets came out strong after the break, pulling one back in the 50th minute to make it 2-1. Any hopes of a comeback were short-lived, though. Just seven minutes later, Tristan Ruiz de Somocurcio scored his first of the season to restore OWU’s two-goal advantage at 3-1. The Bishops controlled the rest of the way, closing out the road win.

Numbers Tell the Story

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Capital 10-7, keeping the ball in dangerous areas for most of the match. The Bishops were more accurate as well, putting 70 percent of their attempts on goal compared to Capital’s 50 percent.

Goalkeeper Sam Whitman started and logged 81 minutes with one save before turning duties over to Zach Hertzberg for the closing stretch.

Looking Ahead

With the win, OWU improves to 3-2-3 on the season. Capital drops to 1-4-1.
The Bishops return home on Saturday for another clash with an OAC opponent, hosting Marietta at 4:00 PM at Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
