Ohio Wesleyan University will take center stage in November 2026 as the host institution for the ninth Great Lakes Invitational, one of the most respected early-season events in Division III men’s basketball. The announcement was made Friday night by tournament creator and director Ryan Whitnable, who emphasized the fit between the event’s reputation and OWU’s long-standing presence in the Great Lakes region.
The invitational will be held November 20 and 21, 2026, inside Branch Rickey Arena. Eight programs are set to compete: Ohio Wesleyan, Berry, Denison, Johns Hopkins, Illinois Wesleyan, Marietta, Redlands, and Saint Joseph’s of Maine. Matchups will be released in spring 2026.
This marks OWU’s second appearance in the GLI; the Bishops last played in the 2019 edition. Hosting the event places OWU among just a handful of North Coast Athletic Conference institutions to assume that role, joining Wabash, Wittenberg, and Wooster.
Why the Tournament Matters
The GLI has built a reputation as a proving ground for teams that expect to be part of the national conversation. Its draw isn’t tied to a single storyline but to the level of competition it attracts year after year. Bringing that environment to Delaware is a meaningful lift for the early weeks of the 2026–27 season.
The decision to host comes with both opportunity and pressure. Opening the season at home against nationally regarded programs demands precision from the start. There’s little room for easing in or experimenting once the ball goes up. For OWU, though, that environment can sharpen a team quickly and signal where it stands in the wider Division III landscape.
What Fans Can Expect
Branch Rickey Arena is a natural venue for the event, offering an atmosphere that balances accessibility with intensity. Fans will see programs with distinct styles, deep rosters, and postseason ambitions. The variety alone makes the two-day event compelling, but the early timing adds another layer, giving everyone a first look at how these teams intend to shape their seasons.
This edition of the GLI also brings new geographic variety: teams from the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, South, and West Coast will share the floor. That mix keeps the tournament fresh and avoids the repetitive feel some early-season events fall into.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 Great Lakes Invitational is positioned to be one of the signature weekends of the Division III season. For Ohio Wesleyan, it’s a chance to showcase the campus, the community, and a program that has seen plenty of success in the region. For the participating teams, it’s an early test against opponents they might otherwise never face.
