Sunbury residents will have a chance to take part in one of Ohio’s most visible law enforcement remembrance efforts when the annual Light Ohio Blue cruiser caravan comes through the community on Wednesday, May 6.

The caravan is expected to pass through Sunbury at approximately 7:15 PM, with local officials encouraging residents to gather along the route, show support, and help turn the community blue for the evening. The exact route is expected to be announced next week. Signs, flags, blue ribbons, and blue lights are all encouraged as simple ways for residents and businesses to participate. The campaign also uses the hashtag #lightohioblue2026.

A Statewide Tribute

Light Ohio Blue is a statewide campaign held each May to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and to show support for those who continue to serve. Across Ohio, businesses, public buildings, landmarks, and homes are encouraged to shine blue lights as a sign of remembrance and solidarity. The official Light Ohio Blue site describes the campaign as one dedicated to “Honoring Ohio’s Fallen Heroes” and supporting law enforcement across the state.

This year’s campaign begins with the annual Memorial Cruiser Caravan on Wednesday, May 6, with law enforcement agencies from across the region taking part. New Albany has announced that the caravan will pass through that community at 6:15 PM, while Johnstown has announced a 6:30 PM expected time, placing Sunbury later in the evening route.

From Columbus To All Of Ohio

The campaign began in May 2016 as “Light Up Columbus Blue,” a grassroots effort to illuminate three downtown Columbus buildings during National Police Week. It followed the line-of-duty death of Columbus SWAT Officer Steven Michael Smith one month earlier.

The effort expanded in 2017 as “Light Central Ohio Blue,” then became the statewide “Light Ohio Blue” campaign in 2019. It has since grown into Ohio’s largest law enforcement appreciation campaign.

How Sunbury Can Take Part

Residents are encouraged to watch for the route announcement next week and choose a safe place along the procession path. Supporters can bring signs, display flags, wear blue, place blue ribbons outside homes or businesses, or switch exterior lights to blue during the campaign. More information about the statewide effort is available at LightOhioBlue.org.
