Reflecting recent census data, boundary lines of the four City of Delaware City Council wards are being updated.
Each one of the four wards is being adjusted to more accurately balance population totals that have changed since the ward boundaries were last updated in 2011, following the 2010 Census
The changes will give each ward about 25 percent of Delaware’s roughly 41,000 residents, or around 10,300 residents in each ward in 2022.
City Council plans to hold a public hearing on the new boundaries July 11 and can approve them at its July 25 meeting. The new boundaries will go into effect in spring 2023. The Delaware County Board of Elections will facilitate the changes and notifications.
Among the considerations that go into the new boundaries are maintaining the ward’s integrity, balancing the population counts among the wards, and maintaining traditional neighborhoods with common interests that exists within each ward.
Overseeing the redrawing of boundaries is city staff from Planning and Community Development, Geographic Information Systems and Information Technology.
