Every year, hundreds of Delaware Countians make their way to the east side of Columbus on the first step of travel around the county and the world.

Those travelers will see big changes soon to John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH), and the first steps are already underway. The Blue Shuttle Lot closed to new parkers on Monday to make way for the construction of a brand-new terminal set to open in 2029. Meanwhile, expanded parking options, including a 2,550-car addition to the Red Lot, will ensure passengers are accommodated during the transition.

A Transformative Investment in Columbus

Joseph R. Nardone, President & CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, calls the project a “transformative investment in the future of CMH.” The $2 billion endeavor includes much more than just a new terminal—it’s a comprehensive overhaul designed to enhance passenger experience and increase the airport’s capacity. Once completed, the current terminal will be retired and demolished, paving the way for more overnight aircraft parking, which will streamline early morning departures.

The new terminal is being built to handle 51% more passengers daily, a significant increase in capacity for a city and region on the rise.

What Travelers Can Expect

Effortless Travel with Streamlined Design

One of the most exciting aspects of the new terminal will be a single, centralized security checkpoint, eliminating the need for disconnected concourses. This design ensures that all amenities are easily accessible, providing a more seamless travel experience.

Parking Made Easy

A new 5,000-space parking garage will complement the existing parking options. The structure will include accessibility features and electric vehicle charging stations, making it a future-forward solution for travelers.

Seamless Connections

The new terminal will be linked to the parking garage, transportation center, and rental car facilities by an elevated pedestrian bridge. The transportation center will serve as a hub for shuttles, rideshares, taxis, and buses, providing smooth and convenient connections for all travelers.

A Modern and Welcoming Atmosphere

A central marketplace offering panoramic views of the airfield and Columbus skyline will become a focal point for relaxation and connection. Enhanced dining options are also in the works, promising a mix of familiar and exciting new offerings.

Eco-Friendly Features

The terminal will incorporate energy-efficient technology, including smart glass and a reclaimed water system. This commitment to sustainability ensures the facility will serve both travelers and the planet.

Community Questions Answered

Curious about what the future holds for CMH? Here are some of the top questions answered:

  • What happens to the current garage? It will remain operational and will be supplemented by the new parking garage.
  • Will flights be affected during construction? Flight schedules are expected to remain unaffected.
  • Do the runways need expansion? Existing runways, which have been modernized and extended in recent years, can handle anticipated growth.
  • Why switch to a single concourse? A single concourse means greater accessibility and a smoother passenger experience.
  • Will there be international flights? While the new terminal creates opportunities for expanded routes, the decision ultimately lies with the airlines.

The Road Ahead for CMH

The final phase of parking adjustments, including a temporary cell phone lot, will occur in early 2025, keeping the airport operational as construction ramps up. With a projected opening date in 2029, just in time for the airport’s 100th anniversary, CMH is poised to become a hub that reflects Columbus’s vibrant spirit and growth.

As plans continue to take shape, CMH invites the community to stay engaged. Regular updates are available on social media and on the project’s dedicated website, CMH Next.
