The numbers were expected, however seeing them in black and white is unsettling.
On Wednesday, unemployment rates for Ohio’s counties and metropolitan areas were released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
On May 24, we shared information about Ohio’s overall unemployment rate, which stood at 16.8%. Some 823,700 fewer Ohioans had non-agricultural positions in April than in the previous month.
The following are unemployment rates for April for Richland and surrounding counties, as well as the city of Mansfield:
- Delaware – 11.0%
- Franklin – 13.8%
- Knox – 12.4%
- Licking – 13.3%
- Marion – 17.5%
- Morrow – 16.2%
- Union – 16.7%
In addition to being some of the highest numbers yet recorded since employment statistics have been compiled and shared, these number show more divergence among central Ohio counties than is typical.
Of Richland County’s labor force of 104,500, 93,000 were employed in March, leaving 11,500 unemployed. Richland County’s rate in March was 3.6%.
Holmes County had the lowest unemployment rate in Ohio at 6.5%. The highest was Logan County with 30.1%.
