Wendy’s is getting smaller across the United States. Hundreds of restaurants have disappeared from the chain’s map as the Dublin-based company deals with declining sales, rising costs and an effort to eliminate underperforming locations.
For Wendy’s customers in Delaware, however, the latest round of bad news appears to be happening elsewhere. The Ohio restaurants operated by Meritage Hospitality Group, one of the chain’s largest franchisees and a company now in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, are concentrated around Toledo rather than Delaware County.
Hundreds Fewer Restaurants
Wendy’s reported 5,724 U.S. restaurants at the end of its second quarter of 2026, compared with 5,969 at the end of 2025. Through the first half of the year, the company reported 44 U.S. restaurant openings but a net decline of 245 restaurants, meaning closures significantly outpaced new development.
Wendy’s previously said it expected to close roughly 5% to 6% of its U.S. restaurants as part of a broader effort to remove consistently underperforming locations. The pullback comes as sales have weakened. U.S. same-restaurant sales fell 7% during the second quarter compared with the previous year, while U.S. systemwide sales declined 8.2%.
Major Franchisee Files Bankruptcy
The situation gained another dimension September 17 when Meritage Hospitality Group, one of the country’s largest Wendy’s franchise operators, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Meritage operates more than 300 Wendy’s restaurants across 15 states and says its restaurants will continue operating during the restructuring. Its Ohio subsidiary, Wen Ohio LLC, is included in the bankruptcy proceedings.
That might sound significant for Delaware, but Meritage’s Ohio footprint appears to be centered considerably farther north.
Ohio Restaurants Clustered Around Toledo
Meritage reported 12 Wendy’s restaurants in Ohio at the end of 2025, down from 15 previously. Those restaurants trace largely to Meritage’s 2015 acquisition of 15 Wendy’s locations in the Toledo market. Available records do not indicate that Meritage operates Wendy’s restaurants in Delaware. That means the franchisee’s bankruptcy does not currently appear to place the city’s Wendy’s locations directly in the path of that restructuring.
Three Delaware Locations Remain Listed
Wendy’s continues to list three restaurants in Delaware:
185 South Sandusky Street
1850 Columbus Pike
2065 U.S. 23 North
There is one qualification. The company currently lists the South Sandusky Street restaurant as temporarily closed. Wendy’s still identifies it as an active location, however, and available information does not connect the temporary closure to the Meritage bankruptcy or the chain’s national program of permanent closures. The other two Delaware restaurants remain listed with regular operating hours.
National Changes With A Local Exception
Wendy’s current retrenchment represents a notable shift for a company that spent years adding restaurants, remodeling stores and encouraging franchise expansion. Ohio is unlikely to escape the broader contraction entirely. Some restaurants have already disappeared, and Wendy’s has made clear that weaker locations remain under review.
For now, though, Delaware appears to be largely outside the most immediate trouble.
The major Ohio franchise operation caught up in this month’s bankruptcy is centered around Toledo, while Wendy’s continues to maintain a significant presence in Delaware.
