There’s an opening at City Hall right now, the sort that doesn’t come around often and doesn’t last long. Delaware City Council is looking to appoint a resident to fill the vacant Third Ward council seat, and the process is already underway.
This is not a ceremonial appointment. The person selected will serve through November 2027, which means stepping directly into real votes, real debates, and real decisions that shape the city’s direction.
Who can apply and how to check
To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old and live within the City of Delaware’s Third Ward. The city has made this part easy by providing an online map where residents can confirm whether their address falls inside the ward boundaries.
If you’ve ever wondered whether your block counts as Third Ward or just assumed you knew, this is the moment to double-check.
What City Council prefers, and what it doesn’t require
City Council has outlined what it would like to see, while also making clear that flexibility exists.
Preference will be given to applicants who gather 25 signatures from Third Ward residents, limited to one signature per household, and who express interest in running for a full four-year term in 2027. Neither of those steps is mandatory. You can apply without signatures. You can apply without committing to a future campaign. That said, here’s the straight talk: collecting signatures is less about the paperwork and more about showing that you’re willing to knock on doors, listen, and engage. If you want to be taken seriously, it’s a smart move.
The timeline is tight and very specific
This process is moving quickly, and the dates matter.
Applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM on February 4. Candidates who submit complete applications will be invited to a public meeting with City Council on February 16 at 6:30 PM. Ahead of that meeting, candidates will receive a questionnaire from Council that must be completed and returned in advance of February 16.
City Council’s regular meetings take place on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 PM at City Hall, with agendas posted publicly for anyone who wants to follow along.
Forms, signatures, and real-world matters
The city has posted both the application form and an official signature form online. Submission questions can be directed to the Council Clerk by phone at 740-203-1013 or by email. If you’re considering applying and have even one unanswered question, reaching out sooner rather than later is the wise move. Deadlines have a way of arriving faster than expected.
Appointments like this quietly shape the future of local government. They decide who gets a voice at the table and who helps set the tone for the next several years. For Third Ward residents who have ever said, “Someone should do something,” this is one of those rare chances where the city is openly inviting someone to raise their hand and step in.
