The Delaware Fire Department stayed active in August, answering 613 calls for service. That brings the year-to-date total to 4,902 responses, a slight uptick of 0.84 percent compared to this time last year. Crews averaged 20 calls each day, with one especially busy day topping out at 30.

Calls and Incidents

Medical runs once again made up the majority of calls, with 422 emergency medical service responses. False alarms followed at 90, and service calls at 50. Firefighters handled seven fires during the month, including two major incidents on August 9. Crews battled a mobile home fire on South Sandusky Street and a building fire on Fairway Road, each causing more than $10,000 in damages. A third building fire occurred August 25 on Woodrow Avenue.

Severe weather added to the load. On August 13, a thunderstorm led to 11 separate calls for downed power lines in the northeast part of the city.

Response and Readiness

The department reported an average response time of 5 minutes and 19 seconds, with crews arriving within six minutes nearly 71 percent of the time. August also saw 289 patient transports and more than 1,200 hours of firefighter training.

Fire losses for the month totaled $21,000, pushing the annual total to $850,814. No civilian or firefighter injuries were recorded.

In the Community

Beyond emergency response, firefighters continued their outreach efforts. They took part in First Friday, hosted Touch-a-Truck visits, led fire extinguisher training at Ohio Wesleyan University, and installed smoke detectors on Simon Street.

Fire Chief Tim Pyle praised his team’s balance of response, prevention, and public engagement. “The numbers tell part of the story, but what stands out is the dedication of our team,” he said.
