The City of Delaware’s water main replacement project on Elizabeth Street has been extended through June 12, weather permitting, as work continues between West William Street and West Central Avenue.
The project, being handled by the City’s Public Utilities Department, began on April 27 and is being funded through the City’s Water Capital Improvement Fund.
Improving Service And Fire Flow
The work is focused on replacing aging water infrastructure in the area. According to the City, the project is intended to help protect the local water supply while improving water service and fire flow for nearby properties, As part of the project, crews will make new connections to existing water mains on West Central Avenue, West Winter Street, and West William Street. Those connections will require water main shutdowns in the surrounding area.
Notices For Water Shutoffs
The City says notices for scheduled shutdowns, along with any other planned water service interruptions, will be provided 24 hours in advance to affected residents whenever possible. Although advance notice is planned for non-emergency shutdowns, residents may still experience short periods without water service as construction proceeds.
Road Closures, Delays, And Parking Restrictions Possible
While the City says every effort will be made to keep construction-related disruption to a minimum, residents in the area may notice several temporary impacts during regular business hours.
Those may include road closures, traffic delays, restricted street parking, and increased noise. Appropriate road closure signage and traffic control devices will be placed in the work area as needed.
Restoration To Follow Installation
After the new water main has been installed and placed into service, crews will restore affected paved areas and yards. Residents with questions about the Elizabeth Street water main replacement project may contact the City of Delaware Public Utilities Department at 740-203-1901.
