On a cold January night, when most of us are looking for reasons to stay indoors, the Ohio Statehouse offers an invitation that feels lifted from another century.
On Saturday, January 31, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the Atrium of the Statehouse will fill not with speeches or school tours, but with the sounds of fiddles, the sweep of long skirts, and the careful steps of a waltz. The Grande Winter Ball, hosted by members of the 1861 Historical Reenactors and the 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A, invites the public to step directly into the social world of the Civil War era.
You can dance. You can watch. You can learn. And you do not need to know the first thing about a reel or a waltz to be welcome.
History You Don’t Just Read About
This is not a lecture, and it is not a museum display. It is living history in motion.
Reenactors in period dress recreate the social side of 1860s life, when formal dances were a centerpiece of community life. The setting makes the experience even more striking. The Ohio Statehouse Atrium, with its marble floors and soaring architecture, becomes an unlikely but fitting ballroom for an evening that blends history, music, and movement.
For two hours, the past is not behind glass. It is all around you.
Learn the Steps Before the Music Starts
If the idea of dancing feels intimidating, the organizers have thought of that.
At 3:00 PM the same day, a free public dance class will be held in the Atrium. No RSVP. No tickets. No pressure. Just a chance to learn the basic steps and rhythms you will see later that evening.
You can show up in winter boots and a sweater, learn a few moves, and decide later whether you want to return for the ball. Many attendees do exactly that.
A Perfect Winter Road Trip from Delaware County
For readers of 1808Delaware, this is an easy and memorable winter outing.
The Statehouse is roughly 35 minutes south, depending on traffic. Pair the evening with dinner in downtown Columbus, a walk through the illuminated Capitol Square, or a stop at a nearby café before heading home. It turns an ordinary Saturday into something that feels intentional and a little unexpected.
Instead of another night on the couch, you get music, history, architecture, and a story to tell the next day.
You Don’t Have to Be a Historian
One of the quiet strengths of events like this is that they are welcoming to people who simply want to experience something different.
Some attendees arrive in period clothing. Many do not. Some are seasoned reenactors who know every step by heart. Others are first-timers who mostly watch and take it in. Both are equally at home in the room.
You can participate as much or as little as you like.

A Different Kind of Winter Memory
January in Ohio can feel long. Gray skies, early darkness, and routines that start to blur together. The Grande Winter Ball offers a brief, elegant interruption to that rhythm. For a few hours, you trade winter coats for swirling music, marble floors for dance steps, and modern distractions for the simple pleasure of moving to a waltz in one of the most historic buildings in the state.
It is the kind of experience that feels both old-fashioned and refreshingly new.
