Visitors to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and neighboring Zoombezi Bay were treated recently to a double celebration with the opening of two extraordinary attractions: North America Trek and Conservation Tower. Representing nearly $50 million in investment, the new additions combine immersive guest experiences with cutting-edge conservation education—delivering fun with a powerful purpose.

“Today is an exciting day for our institution, and we debut two major new attractions, representing nearly $50 million in capital investment, all in support of our conservation mission,” said Tom Schmid, President and CEO of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. “North America Trek and Conservation Tower are bold examples of Columbus Zoo 3.0, incorporating innovative design, with a strong commitment to sustainability, and all in the pursuit of saving wildlife.”

“We’re proud to offer unforgettable fun that fuels an even greater cause,” said Anthony Sabo, Vice President of Zoombezi Bay and Guest Services. “Every splash at Zoombezi Bay helps support the important work of the Columbus Zoo, funding daily operations and advancing our commitment to inspire, engage, and protect wildlife.”

Exploring the Wild: North America Trek

Spanning eight beautifully designed acres, North America Trek transforms a visit to the Zoo into a journey through diverse and iconic American landscapes—from the misty Smoky Mountains to canyon ridges and northern wetlands. The experience offers:

  • Expansive, naturalistic habitats for black bears, bald eagles, river otters, and Mexican wolves
  • A national park atmosphere, complete with lantern lighting, rustic overlooks, and winding ADA-accessible trails
  • The Ohio Center for Wildlife Conservation, highlighting native species and ecosystem restoration efforts
  • Sustainable features such as green roofs, repurposed trees, and rockwork that mirrors real geology

Many of the animals residing in North America Trek are non-releasable or rehabilitated, offering guests a unique opportunity to connect with wildlife that has overcome significant challenges.

Although the new space is open, final touches are still being made on the aviary—a reflection of the Zoo’s dedication to animal comfort. Some of the aviary’s future residents, like songbirds and swans, will be introduced after the rest of the habitat is fully complete.

Conservation Tower at Zoombezi Bay

Right next door, Zoombezi Bay has made a splash with a waterpark innovation unlike any other. Conservation Tower is the first attraction of its kind to combine exhilarating rides with interactive conservation messaging—turning each splash into a meaningful act of support for wildlife.

The new slides include:

  • The Hive: A swirling, two-person journey through a glowing beehive, with educational elements about the role of pollinators
  • Captina Falls: A multi-lane RallyRACER inspired by real stream conservation work in Ohio
  • Mussel Mayhem: A fast-paced tube ride themed around freshwater mussels and their vital ecological role

The attraction is designed with all guests in mind, offering varied thrill levels and a queue filled with eye-catching art and educational storytelling.

Partnerships and Purpose

These projects were made possible through the generous support of donors and partners who share the Zoo’s commitment to conservation and community enrichment. Lead supporters for North America Trek include Battelle, The Columbus Foundation, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, among others. Conservation Tower was supported by the Delaware County Finance Authority, ProSlide Technology, Adena Corporation, and Pepper Construction.

Together, North America Trek and Conservation Tower mark a transformative moment for central Ohio’s most beloved destination—where wildlife conservation, family fun, and community engagement now go hand in hand like never before.
