For some Delaware County residents, the challenge of obtaining nutritious food begins well before they reach the grocery shelf. Transportation can be just as significant a barrier as cost.

A new Food Access Program from People In Need Inc. and Delaware County Transit is designed to address both. Funded through the Community Development Block Grant program, the initiative will provide eligible residents with free round-trip transportation from select locations to People In Need’s Delaware food pantry. Participants will also receive groceries at no cost.

Service Every Other Week

Transportation will be available every other week through September 23, giving participating households regular access to the pantry without having to arrange or pay for their own transportation.

The program is open to residents of the Village of Ostrander and Orange Township whose household income is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

The partnership combines People In Need’s food-assistance services with Delaware County Transit’s transportation network, addressing two needs that can be closely connected for residents without reliable access to a vehicle.

Reservations Required

Seats must be reserved through Delaware County Transit at least 48 hours before the scheduled trip.

Residents may make a reservation by calling 740-363-3355, selecting Option 1 and asking for the Food Access Program. Participants should bring identification and be ready for pickup at the scheduled time. Questions about eligibility or pantry services may be directed to People In Need at 740-363-6284.

People In Need’s food pantry is located at 138 Johnson Drive in Delaware. Additional information is available at delawarepeopleinneed.org.
