National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced that five students from Westerville have been named finalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program, placing them among the top academic performers in the country.
The students are:
- Cameron Marsolo, Westerville North
- James Scarbrough, Westerville North
- Westley Gorenz, Westerville South
- Sarah Johnson, Westerville South
- Sami Pedro, Westerville South
They now move forward in a national competition that began with more than 1.3 million students who entered by taking the PSAT/NMSQT during their junior year.
A Longstanding Academic Tradition
The National Merit Scholarship Program began in 1955 and is administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a private nonprofit based in Evanston, Illinois. The program identifies and recognizes academically talented high school students across the United States.
Each year, roughly 16,000 students, representing about the top one-half of one percent of seniors in each state, are named semifinalists. From that group, about 15,000 advance to finalist standing after completing a detailed application that includes confirming SAT or ACT scores, submitting an essay, demonstrating strong academic performance, and receiving a school recommendation.
Approximately 6,930 scholarships totaling nearly $26 million will be awarded next spring.
What Comes Next
More than half of the finalists nationwide will ultimately earn the title of National Merit Scholar. Scholarships are awarded in several categories:
- National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, funded directly by the program
- Corporate-sponsored scholarships for students who meet specific criteria
- College-sponsored scholarships for finalists who designate a participating institution as their first choice
Nationally, the organization distributes about $50 million in scholarships annually, including both one-time and renewable awards.
Recognition Means Something
Recognition in the National Merit program carries weight beyond the scholarship dollars themselves. Even being named a semifinalist or finalist can strengthen a college application and may open doors to additional merit aid, honors programs, and recruitment opportunities.
For Westerville North and Westerville South, the announcement underscores the academic strength present in both schools. For the five students recognized this year, it marks a significant milestone in a journey that began with a standardized test but now reflects years of sustained academic effort.
Final scholarship winners will be announced next spring. In the meantime, hearty congratulations to these students!
