Sunbury Parkway Interchange Ceremony Set for July 24
One of the city’s most anticipated projects, the Sunbury Parkway Interchange, will officially break ground on Wednesday, July 24 at 10:00 AM. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is hosting a public ceremony at the current southern terminus of Wilson Road, just south of Tanger Outlets Columbus, where the new I-71 interchange will be built.
Speakers will include ODOT District 6 Deputy Director Anthony Turowski, Delaware County Engineer Chris Bauserman, Commissioner Barb Lewis, and Sunbury Mayor Joe St. John. Council members and residents are encouraged to attend this milestone event for regional mobility and economic development.
Trench Collapse at Price Ponds Prompts Safety Review
Earlier this week, an emergency unfolded at the Price Ponds Subdivision when a trench collapsed during sanitary sewer line installation, temporarily trapping two workers from a subcontractor for Pulte Homes. First responders acted swiftly to free both individuals, who were transported to local hospitals for observation.
In response, the city issued a temporary Stop Work Order for all public improvements on the site pending further investigation. Mayor Joe St. John commended the city’s emergency crews for their bravery and professionalism in a dangerous situation.
Hazardous Spill Temporarily Closes Reservoirs Park
Sunbury’s Service Department has closed Reservoirs Park after a suspected hazardous material spill was discovered in Reservoir #2. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) has been notified and is working with city officials to guide cleanup efforts. Nearby security cameras are being reviewed to identify the source and timing of the spill. No timeline has been provided for when the park might reopen.
Vassell Substation Expansion Planned to Meet Energy Needs
In utilities news, American Electric Power (AEP) has filed a proposal with the Ohio Power Siting Board for a significant upgrade at the Vassell Substation. The plan involves expanding the existing 345-kilovolt facility and constructing two new 345-kV transmission tie lines to connect with the adjacent 765-kV substation.
AEP cites regional growth and the need for grid reliability as key drivers for the project. If approved, construction would begin in September and aligns with the company’s earlier notice of transporting large electrical components through Sunbury in August and September.
