Earlier this week, Sunbury City Council received a detailed update from City Engineer Carla Odebralski, P.E., outlining the latest activity in planning and engineering. Several major construction and design efforts are moving ahead, even as a few material delays shift timelines.

Construction Updates

Work continues at the Wastewater Treatment Plant as part of the long-term expansion project. On Columbus Street, Decker Construction is leveling the city parking lot and preparing the base for a 16-inch section of permeable pavement. New parking lot lights have already been installed.

Progress has slowed slightly because the permeable pavers are temporarily out of stock. Delivery is expected in mid-December, pushing back installation. A recent drone photo shows the lot’s current condition.

Design Work in Motion

The E. Granville Street widening project remains in final design. City staff and consultants met with utility representatives on October 23 to review potential utility conflicts, discuss undergrounding feasibility, and evaluate existing assets. Geotechnical work over the past two weeks is helping shape the retaining wall design. The city is also exploring additional funding sources as plans move forward.

JR Smith Park improvements are close to bidding. With design work complete, the project will be advertised starting Saturday, November 22. Planned upgrades include a splash pad, pavilion, new trail connections, a basketball and pickleball court, and improvements to the parking lot.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Street improvement planning for 2026 is underway. Vernon Street, from Granville to Columbus, is being designed for pavement replacement, resurfacing, and drainage upgrades. Survey work on North Miller Drive is assessing whether the roadway can be widened near Cherry Street and whether traffic-calming pavement markings could help north of that point toward the high school.

The city submitted its 2026 Ohio Public Works Commission funding application before the November 7 deadline.

Additional Notes

Delco Water has started waterline replacement along Cherry Street (from Cheshire Road to State Route 3) and along SR 3 for roughly 500 feet north of that intersection. Affected businesses and school transportation staff received advance notice. Completion is expected by December 23.
