As winter approaches, Sunbury is rolling out two environmentally focused initiatives to help residents recycle holiday string lights and dispose of used passenger tires. With partnerships involving the Delaware Public Health District, the programs aim to keep waste out of landfills and reduce potential mosquito breeding sites.

What follows are highlights of an Administrative Report given to City Council on Wednesday night.

Brighten Up Recycling Efforts: Holiday Lights Disposal Program

Sunbury’s residents often replace holiday string lights, creating significant waste each season. To address this, the city has teamed up with the Delaware Public Health District to offer a convenient holiday lights recycling program. From November 15, 2024, to January 20, 2025, residents can drop off old or non-working lights at the Sunbury Municipal Building (9 E. Granville Street). A specially decorated box on the front porch will serve as the collection point, ensuring residents can participate easily.

The collected lights will be responsibly recycled, helping reduce environmental waste. Residents can find additional drop-off locations on a flyer provided by the Delaware Public Health District, available at the Municipal Building.

Community and Economic Development Updates: Pending Variance Request on E. Cherry Street

In other developments, the Sunbury Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) is evaluating a request for four variances from zoning regulations for a proposed lot split at 376 E. Cherry Street. If granted, this variance would allow the property owner to create a second lot for residential purposes, but approval also depends on the Planning and Zoning Commission’s agreement.

The variance requests include:

  1. Lot Size Reduction: From 12,000 sq ft to 9,000 sq ft.
  2. Front Setback Reduction: From a 75-ft roadway setback to 40 ft.
  3. Rear Setback Reduction: From 40 ft to 15 ft.
  4. Building Size Reduction: From 1,450 sq ft to 1,100 sq ft.

The next BZA meeting to discuss this proposal is scheduled for November 18, 2024, at 5:30 PM.

Clear Out the Tires: Free Passenger Tire Disposal

In addition to the holiday lights program, Sunbury is also addressing public health concerns with a free tire disposal event. This initiative, also in collaboration with the Delaware Public Health District, allows residents to dispose of up to 10 passenger tires without cost.

The event will take place on Saturday, November 23, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Sunbury Services Department (250 Otis Street). By offering this disposal option, the city aims to prevent mosquito breeding sites, which can become problematic in discarded tires. An additional drop-off location is listed on a flyer available from the city.
