There’s a difference between living in a city and understanding how it actually works. This summer, Westerville is offering residents a chance to move from the sidelines into the inner workings of local government through the Westerville Citizen’s Academy Experience.

The multi-week program, held on Thursday evenings, is designed to give participants a clear, practical understanding of how departments operate, how services are delivered, and how decisions take shape. Along the way, residents will meet staff, ask questions, and see firsthand how the pieces fit together.

Applications are open now through Friday, May 29. Those interested can learn more and register at https://Westerville.org/WCA.

Building Understanding One Week at a Time

The academy begins on July 16 with a session focused on Westerville’s history and civic identity. This opening evening provides context for how the city has grown and how its structure supports today’s services, setting a foundation for the weeks that follow.

  • On July 23, attention turns to Human Resources and Community Affairs. Participants will learn how the city recruits and supports employees while also managing programs that connect residents to services and opportunities.
  • The July 30 session highlights Electric and Information Technology. This portion of the program explores the systems that power homes and businesses, along with the digital infrastructure that supports city operations behind the scenes.

From Daily Services to Public Safety

August begins with a focus on essential services. On August 6, the Westerville Water Division and Information Technology team will walk through how water is treated, delivered, and monitored, along with the role technology plays in maintaining reliability.

  • The August 13 session shifts to the Public Service Department, where participants will gain insight into road maintenance, snow removal, and the everyday work that keeps the city functioning smoothly.
  • Parks and Recreation takes center stage on August 20, offering a closer look at facilities, programming, and how public spaces are planned and maintained for community use.
  • On August 27, the spotlight moves to Westerville Police and Fire. This session provides an overview of emergency response, coordination between agencies, and the strategies used to keep residents safe.

Growth, Planning, and the Bigger Picture

As the program moves into September, the focus expands to long-term planning and development. The September 3 session explores Westerville Industry and Commerce along with the City’s courts, giving participants a better understanding of economic development and the local judicial system.

  • On September 10, Economic Development and Planning and Development take the lead. This session examines how growth is guided, how projects are reviewed, and how decisions today shape the city’s future.
  • The academy concludes on September 15 with a City Council session and graduation. Participants will observe council proceedings and mark the completion of a program that brings them full circle from observers to informed residents.

More Than Information, A Path to Involvement

One of the program’s strengths is that it goes beyond explanation. Participants are introduced to opportunities to serve on Westerville Boards and Commissions and to engage in community service. That matters because local government works best when residents are not just informed, but involved. By making those pathways visible and accessible, the academy helps bridge a gap that often keeps people from participating.

For residents who have ever wondered how decisions are made or how to take part in shaping their community, this program offers a clear and approachable starting point.
