During the March 23 Board of Education meeting for Olentangy Local Schools, Board President Kevin O’Brien presented an update on the search for the district’s next superintendent.

Over the past few weeks, the board sought community input through a survey, focus groups, and a text survey, gathering valuable feedback about desired qualities in the new superintendent. The community expressed a preference for a candidate with vision, leadership, approachability, inclusivity, transparency, integrity, strong communication and listening skills, and knowledge of Olentangy.

The board plans to use this feedback in their decision-making process as they review the applicant pool and commence interviews after April 17. In addition, Dr. Kevin Daberkow shared Treasurer Ryan Jenkins’ concerns about the negative impact of House Bill 1 on Olentangy taxpayers, praising the legislators for their opposition to the bill and support for fair school funding.

Olentangy High School senior Keshav S. was also recognized at the meeting for his selection as a 2023 student delegate for the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Keshav attended the 61st annual USSYP Washington Week, where he gained valuable insights from notable figures such as Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, and General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He expressed gratitude to the board and district leadership for providing opportunities to pursue his interests in speech and debate, policy, and public service.

Superintendent Mark T. Raiff highlighted student achievements in the MathCounts, DECA, and Educator Rising programs and announced that several students would advance to national competitions. He also reminded the community about the upcoming spring break from March 27 to March 31 and the conference exchange day scheduled for April 7.

Assistant Treasurer Madison Ratliff, speaking on behalf of Treasurer Ryan Jenkins, reviewed the action items for the meeting, further emphasizing the importance of community involvement and support for the district’s ongoing initiatives and achievements.
