The Stratford Ecological Center in Delaware County has unveiled an engaging lineup of winter programs that promise to educate, entertain, and inspire participants of all ages. From learning about trees in the depths of winter to celebrating the sweet tradition of maple sugaring, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this season’s offerings.


Celebrate Maple Sugaring Season

Maple Sugar Tours

February 8 and 15 | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
All Ages | $10

Explore the magic of maple sugaring during a one-hour guided tour through Stratford’s forest. Participants will learn to identify sugar maples, try their hand at tree-tapping, and witness the fascinating process of turning sap into syrup at the Sugar Shack. Sample freshly collected sap and taste the golden syrup, with local maple products available for purchase afterward.

Maple Sugar Fest

February 22 | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
All Ages | $10 (Ages 2 and under free)

The Maple Sugar Fest is an immersive family-friendly event celebrating the arrival of spring. Highlights include a walk along the Storybook Trail to the Sugar Shack, live syrup demonstrations, and a chance to meet Stratford’s adorable newborn farm animals. Visitors can also tour the greenhouse, warm up by the fire, and shop for local syrup and other farm-fresh goods to enjoy at home.

At Stratford’s Winter Farm School, children will explore the wonders of farming and nature through hands-on activities. From caring for animals to tapping maple trees, students will gain a deeper understanding of Ohio’s ecosystems and where their food comes from. The program aligns with Ohio Academic Standards, offering a unique alternative learning experience.


Ongoing Programs to Enrich and Engage

Herb Study Group

Second Tuesday of the Month | January – December | 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
$10 for the year

Whether you’re an experienced herbalist or a curious beginner, this participant-led group explores a variety of herbs each month. Activities include tending to the herb garden, sharing recipes, and building community among enthusiasts.

Book Talks

Third Friday of the Month | January – December | 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM
Donation Based

Dive into engaging literary discussions led by Stratford’s naturalist Liz Barker. With a focus on agriculture, nature, and homesteading topics, this social gathering offers a lighthearted way to explore books without the pressure of finishing them.


Get Active with the Fantastic Frigid 5K

January 25 | 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
All Ages | $40

Runners and walkers are invited to brave the winter weather during Stratford’s Frigid 5K events. The scenic course winds through the nature preserve, combining nature trails with small sections of paved paths. Hosted in partnership with the Columbus Running Company, these races are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking to stay active in the cold months.
