A simple square of paper can become a crane, a flower, a box, or something entirely unexpected.
This May, Community Library in Sunbury will invite residents to explore that transformation during Origami for Everyone, a free, hands-on program for all ages. Sessions will be offered on Saturday, May 9 at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, and Tuesday, May 19 at 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM.
Each participant will create one or two origami projects. All materials will be provided, and registration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
A Tradition Built One Fold At A Time
Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, takes its name from the words oru, meaning “to fold,” and kami, meaning “paper.” While paper folding likely began in China after the invention of paper, the tradition became especially associated with Japan, where folded paper forms were once used in religious rituals, formal ceremonies, and gift-giving customs.
Because paper was once expensive, early folded designs often had ceremonial meaning. Over time, as paper became more widely available, folding moved from ritual settings into homes, schools, and recreation.
One of the most familiar origami figures is the crane, a symbol of long life, happiness, and good fortune in Japanese culture. The tradition of folding one thousand cranes, known as senbazuru, is often associated with hope, healing, peace, and wishes for a long life.
From Craft Table To Engineering Lab
Origami is often thought of as a quiet craft, but its influence reaches far beyond art projects. Paper folding encourages patience, hand-eye coordination, spatial reasoning, and an understanding of symmetry and geometry.
In the modern world, origami principles are also used in engineering, robotics, architecture, medical devices, and designs that need to fold compactly and unfold with precision. The same basic idea that turns paper into a crane can help inspire solutions for objects that must expand, collapse, move, or fit into tight spaces.
