As Delaware prepares to line the streets for its annual Veterans Parade, organizers are asking local bakers to contribute another kind of salute: something sweet for the veterans taking part. The Delaware Veterans Parade is seeking donations of homemade baked goods to accompany the meal served to participating veterans before the parade on Sunday, November 1. Organizers are inviting area residents to donate cookies, brownies, cupcakes and other individually portioned desserts that can be served easily during the pre-parade lunch.
Feeding the Veterans Before the Parade
The baked goods will become part of the meal provided to veterans before they head out for the community celebration. Any single-serving dessert item is welcome. Organizers ask that anyone donating items containing nuts clearly label them so volunteers can identify them for those with allergies or dietary concerns.
The effort offers residents who may not be marching in the parade another way to participate in the day and show their appreciation for local veterans.
Three Chances To Drop Off Donations
Desserts can be delivered to the Jr. Fair Building at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, 236 Pennsylvania Ave., during three scheduled collection periods:
- Friday, October 30 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
- Saturday, October 31 from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM
- Sunday, November 1 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM
The Sunday collection takes place shortly before the veterans’ lunch and the parade itself.
Easy Desserts To Donate
Cookies, brownies, blondies, cereal treats and simply frosted cupcakes are among the easiest choices because they travel well and can be served without refrigeration. Individually wrapping or bagging portions can also make distribution easier.
Organizers specifically ask that desserts containing nuts be clearly labeled. Donors may also want to note other common allergens such as wheat, milk, eggs, soy, peanuts or tree nuts. A simple label such as “Contains: peanuts, wheat, milk and eggs” is sufficient.
A Community Tradition Built Around Service
The Delaware Veterans Parade brings veterans, families and community members together each year to recognize military service while giving residents an opportunity to show their support from along the parade route. This year, that support can begin in the kitchen.
Whether it is a tray of cookies, a batch of brownies or a dozen cupcakes, organizers say every donation will help make the pre-parade meal a little more special for the men and women being honored.
