A building that has stood watch over downtown Delaware since the 19th century is once again opening its doors after dark, inviting visitors to explore not only its history, but the stories that refuse to stay quiet.

The Delaware County Historical Society has announced the return of its Public Paranormal Tours at the Historic Jail and Sheriff’s Residence, a program that blends documented history with guided investigation. For those drawn to places where the past feels close at hand, this is one of the most immersive experiences available locally.

A Building With a Long Memory

Constructed in 1878 at 20 West Central Avenue, the Historic Jail and Sheriff’s Residence is a striking example of civic architecture from an era when public buildings were designed to convey permanence and authority. Its brick walls and towered profile have witnessed generations of change in Delaware. Over time, the building has also developed a reputation for something less easily explained. Staff and visitors alike have reported unusual occurrences, giving rise to the belief that the site may still be inhabited in ways that extend beyond the historical record.

These tours lean into that dual identity. Participants are first grounded in the building’s documented past before stepping into a more uncertain, exploratory experience.

From History to Investigation

Each evening is structured to move deliberately from education to experience. Guests begin with an introduction to the site and its stories before transitioning into a guided, two-hour paranormal investigation led by Tri-C Ghost Hunters. The experience is intentionally hands-on. Visitors are encouraged to observe, listen, and participate, using simple tools such as flashlights, recording devices, pendulums, or dowsing rods. The setting itself does much of the work, especially as the lights go out and the building settles into the quiet of the night.

Two groups are offered per evening:

  • Group 1 begins check-in at 7:45 PM, with the investigation running from 8:15 PM to 10:15 PM
  • Group 2 begins check-in at 11:15 PM, with the investigation running from 11:45 PM to 1:45 AM

Each concludes with a short debrief, giving participants a chance to compare notes and reflect on what they experienced.

Limited Access, Intentional Atmosphere

To preserve both the integrity of the building and the quality of the experience, attendance is capped. Not every area of the jail is accessible during tours, and the smaller group sizes help maintain the atmosphere that makes the investigation compelling.

There are also clear guidelines. The tours are designed for older audiences, with no one under 18 admitted unless 16- or 17-year-olds are accompanied by a parent or guardian or have proper waivers. Alcohol is not permitted, and participants should come prepared for a low-light environment. The result is an experience that feels focused rather than theatrical, relying on the building itself rather than staged effects.

A Season That Builds Toward October

Tours are scheduled monthly from April through October, gradually moving toward the season when interest in the paranormal naturally peaks. The dates include April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, August 15, September 12, and two October evenings on the 9th and 16th. At $40 per ticket, the tours are positioned as a specialized experience rather than a casual drop-in event. Eventbrite fees apply, and advance reservations are strongly encouraged given the limited capacity.
