Gallant Farm is settling into the colder months with a full lineup of programs meant to help visitors feel like they’ve stepped back nearly a century without ever leaving 2025. Alongside regular tours and demonstrations, the farm’s winter book group is returning with a mix of classics and modern favorites that echo the eras the site interprets.

The Cowpie Society Returns

Held at Gallant Farm and open to ages 12 and up, the Gallant Farm Literary & Cowpie Society invites readers to dive into stories tied to the Great Depression, World War II, or the broader early-20th-century world. It’s informal, welcoming, and shaped by lively conversation rather than academic analysis. New members can jump in at any point.

Winter Reading Schedule

All meetings begin at 2:00 PM.

Sunday, December 7
Braiding Sweetgrass
Robin Wall Kimmerer’s blend of memoir, ecology, and Indigenous knowledge gives the group a contemporary starting point while still touching themes of land, memory, and stewardship.

Sunday, January 25
Moby Dick by Herman Melville
A shift into big American storytelling, with plenty for the group to unpack in the middle of winter.

Sunday, February 22
Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald
A return to the interwar years through one of Fitzgerald’s most layered works.
