The Delaware Hayes Thespian Troupe, a collective of student actors primarily from Rutherford B. Hayes High School, has been a cornerstone of local arts and culture. With a history that stretches back to 1973, the troupe has consistently delivered high-quality theatrical productions. Originally, all performances were held in the Willis Auditorium until 1997, when a new auditorium was added to the high school, elevating the troupe’s potential for even grander shows.

The Seasonal Spotlight

Every year, the Hayes Thespians captivate audiences with a fall play in October and a spring musical in March. While additional shows are rare, the troupe’s dedication to their craft ensures that each production is a must-see event. This year, they are bringing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, “The Great Gatsby,” to life on stage.

The Tale of Gatsby: A Timeless Story

Adapted by playwright Simon Levy, the story revolves around Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, and his unrequited love for Daisy Buchanan. Nick Carraway, a newcomer to Long Island, finds himself entangled in a world of opulence, obsession, and peril. Critics have lauded Levy’s adaptation, describing it as a “brilliant distillation” of Fitzgerald’s work. The play has received praise from publications like the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Minneapolis Star Tribune, and Arizona Daily Star, among others.

The Creative Minds Behind the Curtain

The production is helmed by Head Director Kelsey Wright, with Amanda Johnson serving as the Assistant Director. The set design is the brainchild of Erin Ross, while Linda Hurley is responsible for the costumes. Technical Directors Billy Ruhlen and Ken Flaglor ensure that the show runs smoothly, making it a collaborative effort that promises an unforgettable experience.

Event Details and Ticket Information

The play is scheduled for Thursday, October 26 at 7:30 PM and Saturday, October 28 at 7:30 PM. The venue is the Rutherford B. Hayes Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are priced at $9.00 for adults and $6.00 for students and seniors. The running time for the play is approximately 2 hours. For those interested in attending, tickets can be purchased here.
