On Monday, January 19, the district will observe the holiday by turning it into a hands-on Day of Service, inviting students, families, and community members to take part in a morning focused on giving, learning, and local impact. Donation items can be dropped off between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

The theme is simple and intentional: Strengthening Our Communities, Inspired by the Dream.

Why Service Matters on MLK Day

Dr. King’s words still land with clarity: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” Olentangy’s approach does not treat that quote as a slogan. It treats it as an assignment.

Rather than limiting the day to reflection alone, the district is pairing learning with action. Students are encouraged to see service not as a one-time gesture, but as a civic habit. This framing matters, especially for young people who are still forming their sense of responsibility to the places and people around them.

Who the Donations Support

The donation drive supports a wide range of local partners, each serving a distinct need across Delaware County and beyond. Requested items include everyday essentials, hygiene products, food staples, and children’s activities. Among the organizations involved are:

• People In Need, Inc.
• Humane Society of Delaware County
• Delaware County Diaper Bank
• Nationwide Children’s Hospital
• Neighborhood Bridges Olentangy
• CRIS
• Turning Point
• Huckleberry House
• LSS Faith Mission

The variety is intentional. It allows participants to see how many forms “community” actually takes, from families facing food insecurity to animals in shelters to students who simply need diapers, socks, or school-ready basics.

More Than a Collection Table

What makes this effort stronger than a standard donation drive is its connection to service-learning. The day is designed to help students understand why these items matter, who they help, and how local organizations work day to day.

That context turns generosity into understanding. Without it, service risks becoming transactional. With it, service becomes formative. Donations are accepted the morning of January 19 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Those planning to contribute are encouraged to review the full donation lists ahead of time so items align with real, current needs.

The district has made the process straightforward, which lowers the barrier to participation and increases the likelihood that help arrives where it is actually useful.

The Bigger Picture

This is not about checking a box for a holiday. It is about modeling what civic life looks like when schools act as community anchors rather than closed systems. In that sense, Olentangy’s MLK Day of Service does something quietly important. It reminds everyone involved that honoring Dr. King’s legacy is less about what we say on one Monday in January and more about what we choose to do together.

For one morning, at least, the question is clear. The answer is action.
