Nine Westerville seniors are finalists in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, according to a recent announcement by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
They include:
- Andrew Boyd, Noah Gibson, Anthony Malek, Daine Marburger and Andrew Miller at Westerville Central
- Jacob Fouse, Luke Haman and Shrey Shyamalan at Westerville North
- Samson Gurgiolo at Westerville South
The Westerville seniors are among more than 15,000 finalists who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,140 National Merit Scholarships that will be offered next spring.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 95% of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is a prestigious academic scholarship competition in the United States for high school students planning to attend college. To qualify for this program, students need to take the PSAT/NMSQT, usually in their junior year, and meet specific requirements such as being enrolled full-time in high school, having a strong academic record, and intending to enroll in college after graduation.
Notable individuals who have been National Merit Scholarship Program honorees include prominent figures like Bill Gates, Mae Jemison, Jeff Bezos, and Elena Kagan among others4. Additionally, some universities offer additional merit-based funding for students who are National Merit Scholars, Finalists, or Semifinalists, with annual reports displaying the number of award winners enrolled at different institutions.
