The City of Delaware invites the community to a Black History Month Celebration on Saturday, February 22, from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM at SourcePoint, located at 800 Cheshire Rd. This free event will honor African American heritage, culture, and contributions, featuring an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Mark Lomax, II, an acclaimed composer, recording artist, drummer, activist, educator, and author.
The formal program begins at 5:00 PM, with an evening of music, reflection, and community engagement. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP in advance via Eventbrite.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Mark Lomax, II
A distinguished musician and thought leader, Dr. Mark Lomax, II specializes in the intersection of African American art, music, and socio-political discourse. His work leverages the power of the arts to foster dialogue and build community.
“There has never been a time in my life that music was not a part of me,” Lomax shares, reflecting on his early influences. Raised in a home where gospel and jazz were central, he was deeply inspired by his father, a pastor, and his mother, a gospel composer. Lomax later studied under Dr. Raymond Wise, founder of the Center for the Gospel Arts, and earned a Doctor of Music Arts degree in composition and music theory from The Ohio State University.
His career includes collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Delfeayo Marsalis, Clark Terry, Marlon Jordan, Azar Lawrence, Bennie Maupin, Billy Harper, and Ellis Marsalis. Jazz Times praised Lomax’s dynamic playing, stating his “forceful drumming would have made Elvin Jones proud.”
Beyond jazz, his classical compositions have been performed by prestigious ensembles, including the Czech National Symphony, London Symphony Orchestra, Burlington Symphony Orchestra, and Carpe Diem String Quartet. Lomax has also held residencies with the Cincinnati Symphony and Denison University.
In 2019, Lomax released his ambitious project, 400: An Afrikan Epic—a 12-album cycle, curriculum, and documentary that chronicles the African diaspora’s journey and cultural legacy. This work has been presented at universities and arts organizations nationwide.
A Musical Celebration: The Mark Lomax Trio
As part of the event, attendees will experience a live performance by The Mark Lomax Trio, bringing an evocative and powerful sound to the evening’s celebration. Lomax’s ability to fuse jazz, classical, and African musical traditions promises a thought-provoking and inspiring performance.
A Taste of Culture: Soul Food and Community Connection
No celebration is complete without great food! Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres from Zade’s Soul Food LLC, a beloved local eatery known for its authentic and flavorful dishes.
